When flares rear their ugly heads after a time of remission … you have to stop them immediately before they damage your intestines and prolong healing. [A stitch in time saves nine.]

Immediately you suspect a flare coming on, start eating only your very basic ‘safe’ foods. Also make sure these safe foods are as fresh as possible. [for example eggs or chicken having stayed on a supermarket shelf for a couple of weeks or more would be very bad]

Start on the medications that last helped you overcome your last flare. [Start slowly ... do not immediately consume mega-doses! Remember how hard it was to taper down last time!]

As with other illnesses and even more so with IBD … rest, and if possible bed rest. [Treat your digestive system like you would a new born baby!] [A small sacrifice of time / day off in the beginning will save many days off in the future]

Help your body to heal quickly by supplementing with vitamins, minerals, etc. [eg. glutamin]. Anything that helped you last time.

Remember what helped you last time? Take notes and keep them handy for a future flare. ‘New’ flares are easy to deal with. After they have done their damage … you are back to square one!
